It’s September 2010, and you’re starting your studies at Maastricht University (UM). In doing so, you have a full array of modern study facilities to make use of. We invite you to come in and have a look around; to go on the hunt for your favourite study place in the University Library. On every visit you can choose a different study place, depending on what’s on the programme for that day.
Two library locations
Your study programme will determine which of the two library locations is the most suitable for you: the Inner City or the Randwyck Library. These libraries are located near the inner city and Randwyck faculties, respectively. Last year, the inner city location was given a new look. In Randwyck, we’ve also been working hard this summer to be able to offer you state-of-the-art study facilities. The renovations are scheduled to be completed in September.
Substantive and practical support
The library’s study facilities offer you support relating to both your subject matter and practical matters during your studies, by way of:
- 1940 study places spread across the two library locations, 910 of which are equipped with a computer.
- Several hundred connection points for your laptop spread over each location. A secure, wireless network has been installed in all UM buildings.
- Hardcopy books and journal collections as well as electronic journals, books and databases.
- The latest interactive learning resources.
- Ergonomic study places, in open areas and group study rooms; in quiet areas and study cells.
- The Computer Resource Centre in Randwyck, which provides computer labs for students of the faculties of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) and Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN).
- Excellent general facilities, such as lockers and printing, copying and scanning facilities.
So where can you sit?
The information screens above the entrances to the Inner City Library and the Randwyck Library tell you in one glance, where you can find an available study place with a computer that suits your needs.
Meeting place
If you wanted to, you could spend the whole day in the building. Along with study facilities, we also offer an appealing meeting place: In the Inner City Library you’ll find lounge facilities, a coffee corner in the hall (where you can also buy your lunch fresh every day) and a courtyard garden. In the Randwyck Library, the reading and internet café LINK is located right next to the library entrance. The Randwyck Library itself doesn’t have a garden, but near the Computer Resource Centre you’ll find the bamboo garden (for general use by all UM students and staff). You can also easily access the cafeteria and coffee corner in Universiteitssingel 40 via a walkway.
Opening hours and house rules
The library has long opening hours. As a rule, we’re open seven days per week; in fact, the Inner City Library doesn’t close till midnight.

We’ve also kept the house rules to a minimum, with the assumption that you are responsible for keeping your study environment pleasant, neat and clean.
In short: it’s a fantastic environment where you can feel free to come and study in comfort! For this reason, we’ll also be interested in hearing your feedback.
