As of the academic year 2010/11, the University Library in cooperation with the Institute for Education of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) is offering a digital, 3D anatomical atlas: Primal Pictures. The advice and expertise of the FHML’s Anatomy and Skills Lab sections have been particularly important in the choice for this package.
Primal Pictures offers realistic, three-dimensional images, usually based on MRI scans of live subjects. These images rotate and make the anatomical structures visible in different layers, clearly illustrating bodily functions, biomechanics and even surgical procedures. Primal Pictures contains texts, MRI scans, animations and videos.
Along with University Library’s offer of e-journals and its increasing collection of e-books, this new package is part of the library’s efforts to digitalise its collection.
For questions about accessibility and technical issues, you can contact the library via ‘Ask your librarian’. If you need support in terms of subject matter, please contact the staff of the Anatomy section.
You can find Primal Pictures via the link ‘Databases a-z’ on the library homepage. It is accessible from the UM campus, but also from any PC with internet access once you have logged in with your Unimaas account.
