What does it do?
Camtasia Studio (developed by Techsmith) offers several possibilities. It can be used as an integrated recording tool for PowerPoint presentations, with or without a camera attached to the laptop or PC. It can furthermore be used as a tool for creating online instruction materials. Camtasia records (part) of the computer screen on which a PowerPoint is played or software is shown. The recorded video can afterwards still be edited. The final output can be converted into many diverse extensions, making it a very flexible program.
How does it work:
Camtasia guides users through several steps via a wizard. You need to choose whether you want to add audio to your screen recording or also a camera. What part of the screen needs to be recorded? Is the audio level okay or does it have to be adapted? Once all steps are finished you start the recording by clicking the F9 button. When you want to stop the recording press F10. The recording now automatically starts to play. When you are satisfied, save the recording. Now it is time for editing the video. Insert a title page, add extra voice over, select an area of the screen where you want to zoom into. Delete certain parts, include a test that checks whether students understood the material. Finally select the video quality (what internet connection do your students have), what type of video output do you need? WMV, QuickTime, Flash, Ipod(mp4)? It is all possible!
Examples:
Powerpoints with voice over (can be used in a real lecture situation)
Powerpoints with audio and video (usually recorded without an audience)
Self Instruction Modules (creating “how to” videos with voice over, additional arrows, zooming etc.)
