Dropbox: convenient and secure?
Posted on 10. Nov, 2011 by Maarten Seegers in Tools
“Dropbox is a service that lets you bring all your photos, docs, and videos anywhere, and share them easily. Any file you save to your Dropbox will automatically save to all your computers, your phone or iPad, and the Dropbox website.” – Taken from the Dropbox website.
This makes dropbox a very convenient tool to not only share holiday pictures, but also aid in (international) cooperation in research matters. Would you share research documents using the dropbox service in the cloud? Amongst many, this article shows that dropbox is insecure by design. If any part of the files shared by the service is confidential, it shows that dropbox software is not suitable for this purpose due to security reasons.

Before the library starts to criticize services like dropbox it should offer services itself that are secure and usable. The space to save your files on the Maastricht University network is far to small. 50mb were enough 5 to 10 years ago but are not any longer sufficient in 2011.
