Professor Wiel Kusters, an expert on the works of Pierre Kemp, integrated this collection into the Maastricht University (UM) heritage collection and was therefore chosen to present and explain these works for the first time.

The presentation was held on 15 May at the University Library’s inner city location. Those present included representatives of the Maastricht culture and heritage institutions, ambassadors of the Jesuit collection and members of the Maastricht University Arts and Culture Committee.

Maastricht Academic Heritage Fund

During the festivities, director of the University Library Ingrid Wijk informed attendees of the plans for the recently founded Maastricht Academic Heritage Fund. With this fund, the library hopes to expand, conserve and digitise these special UM collections and make them available to a wider audience as well as to research and education. The fund is part of the University Fund Limburg/SWOL.

Anyone interested in contributing to the fund and helping to ensure that the special collections of Pierre Kemp, Charles Eyck and the Jesuits remain accessible can become a friend of the fund. The first fund activity was the creation of a series of cards depicting the choreographic fantasies of Pierre Kemp. These cards can be purchased individually or as a set. Explanation of choreographic fantasies

In 1931, poet and painter Pierre Kemp created twelve so-called choreographic fantasies. Eleven of these are now part of the UM heritage collection while the twelfth, entitled ‘Ideal Baby Competition’, has yet to be found. What Kemp intended for these remarkable revue or ballet creations remains unknown. His personal archives reveal that he hoped to send them to America. Some of these performances seem to correspond to what innovative theatre artists and scenographers were doing at that time in the United States. Presumably he was visually inspired by several images published in the 1931 monograph by Joseph Gregor and René Fülöp-Miller entitled Das amerikanische Theater und Kino (American Theatre and Cinema). This book was part of Kemp’s reference library, which has been included as a special collection in the University Library at Maastricht University. (Literature: Wiel Kusters, Pierre Kemp, een leven. The quality test will consist of a combination of two indicators, one for the quality of the editorial board and the other for the quality of the peer review process. The former indicator will be developed by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University. A team of young researchers at the University of Amsterdam and Tilburg University will develop the indicator for the peer review process.

SURF (the national higher education and research partnership for ICT), Amsterdam University Press, and the CWTS are taking the initiative to develop such an international quality measure. The initiative is supported by the national research funder the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) and the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences(KNAW).

Forum of international experts
During the international Open Access week in October 2012, the indicators will be assessed by a forum of international experts, made up of representatives of research funding bodies, the editors-in-chief of academic journals and publishers. The measure will be established on the basis of their opinion and then released. Publishers will then be able to indicate the “score” that their journals have achieved. The research funders can point the researchers to the score and thereby encourage them to publish in open access. It will also assist authors when deciding which journal to publish in.

SAGE Choice – receive a 90% discount on the open access fee for 158 SAGE journals

An Open Access agreement has been made between SAGE and all Dutch universities. The agreement with Sage covers:

1. All articles published in one of the 158 selected journals (see annex SAGE Choice Programme Journal Titles) and
2. Where the corresponding author is employed at a Dutch university.

The corresponding author employed at a Dutch university will receive a 90% discount on the Open Access Publishing fee and will receive an invoice for $300 (10% of Sage’s Open Access publishing fee).
The corresponding author needs to inform SAGE in time that he/she is entitled to a discount as a corresponding author from a UKB (Consortium of the Dutch Universities and National Library) institution. Please consult carefully the procedures:

1. The discount only applies to the titles that are in the SAGE Choice Scheme and in SAGE Premier 2012 as listed in the SAGE Choice Programme Journal Titles.
2. All submitting authors are alerted to the fact that the SAGE Choice option exists for a title when they are sent an acceptance email, and again when they are sent the Contributors Agreement to authorise.  If they follow the link provided by either of these forms they will be directed to a SAGE Choice Invoice Template.
3. Authors from UKB institutions should indicate they are entitled to the discount by entering the code UKB90 in the “University/Institution Account Code” field.  They should then return this form to the relevant email address at SAGE as instructed on the form.  An invoice for the discounted rate of $300 only will then be raised.
4. Authors must indicate they are entitled to the discount by using this code when initially applying for the SAGE Choice option.  The way the systems are set-up we cannot apply the discount retrospectively.

The Springer Open Choice agreement with the Dutch universities has been terminated!

The ‘Open Choice’-agreement that was made between Springer and all Dutch universities has been terminated. The agreement with Springer entailed that all authors affiliated with a Dutch university did not have to pay for open access publishing with Springer. This agreement with Springer has been terminated. If an author wishes to publish an article that has been accepted after 1 July 2012 as Open Choice, the author or his/her financer must pay the fee themselves. The agreement does still apply to articles accepted by Springer before 1 July 2012!

• will not be available on Tuesday 13 March, between 22.00 and 23.00.
• short interruptions of this service may occur on Wednesday 14 March between 14.00 – 17.00.

We would like to discover what a ‘researcher passport’ should look like.

This study comes directly on foot of the Riding the Wave report, in particular the recommendation to create a directive to set up a unified authentication and authorization system in order that researchers from any discipline can find, access and process the data they need. Within the context of the study, these data encompass not just primary scientific data, but all data that a researcher needs to conduct research (e.g. articles).

As part of this study, a survey related to the workaround of researchers, has been prepared. The help of you as a researcher is highly appreciated. This survey consists of 9 questions and will take only a few minutes of your time. 

The outcome of the survey will help to form recommendations for a directive for the implementation of a single access and authentication system for research.

In January 2006 the Taskforce e-learning has been founded by the University Library. Already from its offspring rector (Gerard Mols) chaired the task force. In the first year the taskforce (with representatives from all faculties) proposed a three year program focusing on e-learning and to which the university board granted a budget of K€450. The projects have been ended last year: financially at 31 December 2010, practically in the first half of 2011.

In the second half of 2011 the report has been offered and discussed by the Executive Board (College van Bestuur), the Education Advisory Board (Onderwijsadviesraad) en the University council (Universiteitsraad) and now its available for all interested in e-learning activities the programme initiated and the experiences and outcomes of the projects.

The foundation of the taskforce was the consequence of positioning maintenance and support of the university wide electronic learning environment (EleUM) within the University Library (in 2006).  Also teacher support aimed at implementing EleUM within teaching and education as well as e-learning initiatives became part of the library’s job. The taskforce aimed at starting up a coherent set of projects focusing on educational innovation by means of e-learning and making these developments part of the university strategy.

In the end report all projects within this strategic programme are described. Themes which were covered (with a reference to the specific paragraph in the document):

• Connecting preliminary education to the UM educational programme (Webspijkeren, §4.4.1)
• PBL redesign for blended and distance education (PGO-online, §4.4.2)
• Interaction in the tutorial groups during meetings as well as based on (with means of ICT) enriched learning resources (CSCL met beeldmateriaal and Computer-augmented face to face PBL, respectively §4.4.3 and 4.4.4)
• Staff development (e-Teacher training, §4.6.1.)
• With e-learning tools facilitated internships (e-Internships, §4.6.2.)
• Mobile devices for teaching and learning (Mobile Learning @ UM, §4.6.3.)
• Simulation within education (Duavivo, §4.6.4)
• And conditions for e-learning (Flankerend Beleid, §4.4.5)

As few titles already imply, the end report is for the greater part in Dutch. You can find information about project leaders as well, and contact them if you need more specific or translated information about a specific project. Of the allocated K€450 K€400 has been used. The under spending has found its way back to the central budget.  

Also an overview of (partially) by SURF financed projects is given and to which the university has committed her self to after being adviced about by the taskforce (chapter 5); projects within the “Nationaal Actieplan e-Learning”, and the programmes on “Studiekeuzegesprekken” and (the still running program) “Toetsing en toetsgestuurd leren”. The university received an institution part of in total K€3.358 from SURF.

Embedding of knowledge and experience has been reached by dissemination activities (e.g. in publications and presentations during thematically programmed seminars and university wide symposia as the Leading in Learning symposium as was held at December 1, 2011. In the final year of the programme continuation of activities has been secured by founding the pillar e-Factor in PBL within the masterplan Leading in Learning. Reports and experiences will be shared with project leaders of current and new projects within this masterplan. Also explicit attention will be given to dissemination and teacher development.
